Proverbs 17

Vs 3:  The refining pot is for is for silver and the furnace for gold, but the Lord tries the hearts.
What's in your heart?  That is what God sees and is interested in.
God knows whats in your heart!

Vs 9:  He who covers and forgives an offense seeks love, but he who repeats or harps on a matter separates even close friends.
What you do here shows your motives I think:

  • Love - Protect
  • Harp - cause separation
Vs 13:  Whoever rewards evil for good, evil shall not depart from his house.
This verse should encourage us to repay evil with good.   Someone say something untrue and hurtful about you? Go and do something good for or to that person.  Not easy - heaping coals as the word says - but only if your motives/your heart is right (vs 3).

Vs 17:  A friend loves at all times, and is born, as is a brother, for adversity.
You will know who your true friends (and family) are when you go through a desert.  We must make sure that the flipside of that statement is not true of us.  What type of friend am I when my friend is going through a tough time?

My encouragement to you is when reading scripture put yourself on both sides of the statement.

God bless

  1. Small but potent gems once again.
It is much easier to just compare ourselves with the one side, but once again you challenge us correctly to look at both sides and to measure ourselves accordingly.

  2. Thanks Stefanie. I appreciate you muchly

  3. OH I needed vs 9 for sure!!! I'm a harper. :)

Thank you so much for sharing.

  4. I am learning to be a friend again. I am learning to pay evil with good.

    I am learning....

    Thank you for sharing.

  5. Hi Pinks, me too. And Lavender, I understand your comment. The only way I am learning to be a friend again is knowing I can only trust God.
    God bless

  6. Great encouragement! We should see how our lives line us with scripture. If I want a friend to stick with me through thick and thin, then I need to be that type of friend too.

  7. This verse that a friend loveth at all times is the verse you left on my blog today :) I love your commentaries - the one on this verse particularily
