Expectations and Contentment!

Following on from my last POST about my dashed expectations, God has told me to "remove my expectations from 'man' and place them on Him."  Why?  He changes and moulds my expectations by changing my heart but I also don't sit here with hurts, angers and resentments from misplaced expectations!

Dashed Expectations!

God further re-iterated this in the next devotional I read which made the point to be content in all circumstances.  Now, we all know this, but I've never followed the "contentment" issue through to lack of expectations.

So, I am to be content whether my expectations are met or not.  If I have no expectations of someone,
  • firstly they cannot disappoint me, and
  • secondly, I don't build up resentments and
  • thirdly, I should be content with that!
There is a potential fourthly:  They may surprise me right?!

God is a very wise being!  In fact, He is the most wise being and as Oswald Chambers says, "No human being knows human beings as God does!"  He knows our strengths and weaknesses and faults and needs, and ....He knows our expectations and I believe that is why He cautions us to be content because to be content means expectations don't rule our emotions!

Phil 4 v 11:  Not that I speak in regard to need, for I have learned in whatever state I am, to be content.

Content, in whatever state I'm in!
I do believe Paul refers here to whatever he has or does not have!  I also believe "whatever state" means emotional needs/wants as well.  So I place my expectations at the feet of Christ and I will be content whether they are met or not.

God bless
Tracy

  7. Tracy - You have done it again! :) The exact verse about contentment was spoke by my pastor yesterday at church. His take was the same...that as we fix our eyes on Him...we can rest. Have peace. Be assured. That we need nothing else. Your word here is always so timely. So key. So life filling! Blessings friend,
    Jen

  9. Beautifully written Tracy; the only person we can expect from is God! God promises to fill our lives with whatever we need regardless of when we think we need it, and He knows the right time always to unfold his graces. :)

    Blessings sweet Tracy!!! :)

  10. Tracy, That portion of Philippians has been taped to my bathroom mirror for years. I plan to leave it there until I'm leaving it out daily. 10 years later and it is STILL there. This is walk is a journey. So thankful for His patience. Thanks for linking up, friend!

  13. Great post, Tracy! I've noticed that when I lower my expectations, it also lowers any tendencies I have to get angry! (I learned this from one of my friends who does counselling.)

And thanks for your recent visit to my "Wild Things" post on Joy4Today! Hope you have a blessed day ...or I guess you're about to enter evening!

  16. A great word today, Tracy! It is so easy to be disappointed in our life's circumstance. But, when we remember that God has us right where He wants us in this moment in time for a reason, things begin to look better! I'm learning to "bloom where I'm planted"! Blessings, Joan

  17. Great truth here Tracy! Love the fact that Paul says this is something he has learned - it definitely doesn't come naturally.

Thanks for stopping in over at Life Lessons! I'm so grateful the Lord teaches me lessons through my pets - somehow it makes it easier for me to understand. That's the simple gal in me! Love your determination to 'take it ALL in' when you read God's word. Hugs & Blessings!
