What's your favourite verse?

Many years ago when we had cell-group at our home, the cell group leader asked us to come back the following week with our favourite verse and why it was our favourite verse.

The following week we dutifully returned with our favourite verse and after opening in prayer, chatting a bit, we got down to it and started sharing.  All I remember is the cell leader saying is "No, no, that verse is important for this or that reason" and him proceeding to tell us why our chosen verse had meaning.  Kind of.... awkward! :)

Now all these years later, I have lots of favourite verses and they tend to change depending on circumstances and where I am in my walk!   Currently it is:  John 3 v 30:  More of Him, less of me.  Its my favourite right now because I know that a solution to any problem I have, anything I need to overcome, is more of Him and less of me.  I need more of His word, I need to focus on Him more, I need to worship Him more, I need to thank and praise Him more.  I need more of Him, full-stop!

What is yours?  I'd love for you to leave a comment with your current favourite verse(s)!  I think its a great way to share scripture together.

God bless friends
Tracy

  2. Hi Tracy,
Good choice of verse; I often have to remind myself to "lose self" and stay centered on God and others! I think I have a favorite verse everyday (ha!), but due to circumstances and challenges I have been facing lately I am reminded to "Be strong and courageous, do not be terrified; do not be discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you where ever you go." Joshua 1:9 :)

Blessings and His grace to you this brand new week!

  3. Oop! This was for Joan... I jumped on your link before posting her comment! Silly me ;D

What a shame you weren't given space and the opportunity to explain why verses were important to you.

We are called to look out for the interests of others and that means giving time and consideration to what others have to say. This post is a reminder of such. Thank you :D

Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day.
Tell of His glory among the nations,
His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.

  9. Hi Tracy,
I had a somewhat similar experience with someone telling me I was clinging to a Scripture verse for the wrong meaning. (Years later I learned the verse does indeed mean what I thought.) But how frustrating! A verse that speaks to me one way may speak to someone else another way. I believe God works that way...He knows what we need, and when we need it.

Two of my favorites are Isaiah 40:29-31 and Matthew 11:28.

    Blessings,
    Laura

  13. I shall be like a tree planted by the river (of life) my leaf will not wither and whatsoever I do shall prosper. To me a favorite verse is the one that you need for the occasion. Let the weak say "I am strong." Some times I need that verse. Thank you for sharing at Tell me a Story. Your group leader was in error trying to tell each person why their verse meant something else. A favorite verse is special to the person for certain reasons and no one should try to take that away or make it less important. :-)

  14. I have discovered the same thing. My favorite verse(s) change depending on what is happening in my life at the time. Sometimes an old favorite becomes a new favorite with a fresh new meaning for me. I love that about God's word -- it is alive and active! My current favorite is 2 Corinthians 12:9 -- "My grace is sufficient for you for my power is made perfect in weakness." I feel so ill-equipped to handle my dad's declining health. However, God is showing me how to depend on Him! He is guiding and leading me as I travel this challenging road. I am so weak, but He is so strong! Blessings, Tracy!

  16. Oooh, that one really strikes at the heart: More of Him, less of me.

I have a couple. One is Hebrews 11:1: Now faith is confidence in what we hope for and assurance about what we do not see.
The other is Jeremiah 29:11: For I know the plans I have for you,” declares the Lord, “plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future.

I left my job almost a year ago to pursue something more in line with my gifts, although at the time I really had no idea what that looked like. It also meant letting go of my steady paycheck and learning to be faithful.

  17. Proverbs 19:18 "Discipline your son, for in that there is hope; do not be a willing party to his death." Jeremy my son was away at a place to help him heal from life's hurts, he was terribly unhappy and wanted to come home. I asked God to give me a clear word as to what I should do. I opened my Bible randomly and it fell open on the Book of Proverbs - the top right hand verse was this one...my eyes fell onto it immediately. Tucked in my Bible on this same page was a piece of paper that Jeremy had scribbled on when he was 6 years old....He had written his name on it and drawn a picture for me....all those years ago I had kept this piece of paper as a momento...and slipped it into my Bible for safe keeping...now God used this piece of paper and His Word to tell me exactly what to do.

  18. My favorite verses always depend on what is going on in my life at that moment. SO MANY!! My Bible looks like that picture much of the time. I guess I would have to say, though, that when I came to the Lord, the man who led me to Him, gave me a N.T., and gave me a verse: Phil. 2:13... For it is God Who works in you to will and to work for His good pleasure. Since then, April 15, 1966, I've added millions, so to speak. But, this truly was a beginning.

    Top two are

    Joshua 24:15
    King James Version (KJV)
15 And if it seem evil unto you to serve the Lord, choose you this day whom ye will serve; whether the gods which your fathers served that were on the other side of the flood, or the gods of the Amorites, in whose land ye dwell: but as for me and my house, we will serve the Lord.

    2 Timothy 3:16 & 17
    King James Version (KJV)
    16 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness;
17 That the man of God may be perfect, thoroughly furnished unto all good works.

I've enjoyed reading all the others verses too---REALLY you cannot go wrong reading the BIBLE!!!

  24. Hi Tracy! What a beautiful blog you have. :) So nice to connect with you via voiceBoks. I have many favorite verses that I've leaned on frequently the past ten years, but the one that comes to mind first and foremost is Hebrews 11 in its entirety, which I won't write out here simply because it's very long...but SO awesome when going through a difficult time and need that last ounce of faith squeezed out of our soul so we can persevere to the finish. They say it's always darkest before the dawn and I found that to be so true not long ago...then God led me to Hebrews 11 and it was just the "smack upside the head" from Him that I needed. :)

    Wishing you many blessings,

  26. Op dit moment hou ik erg van versen uit het tweede hoofdstuk uit het Hooglied van Salomo:

    My beloved spake, and said unto me, Rise up, my love, my fair one, and come away. For, lo, the winter is past, the rain is over and gone; The flowers appear on the earth; the time of the singing of birds is come, and the voice of the turtle is heard in our land;
The fig tree putteth forth her green figs, and the vines with the tender grape give a good smell. Arise, my love, my fair one, and come away.

I love it when out Lord so speaks to me.

  29. I may not be the most religious person, but this is one of my favorite verses:

1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you that is not common to man. God is faithful, and he will not let you be tempted beyond your ability, but with the temptation he will also provide the way of escape, that you may be able to endure it.

He has never failed me. Ever. :)

  31. I agree mine changes constantly. How can you pick just one. Right now I'm focusing my heart on this truth: Psalm 90:17 May the favor[a] of the Lord our God rest upon us;establish the work of our hands for us—yes, establish the work of our hands.

  35. Tracy - it's hard to pick a favorite verse as I have many. I believe my favorite depends on the season of life I am in. One that has been on my heart of late is 1 Chronicles 29:11-12, "Yours, O LORD, is the greatness and the power and the glory and the victory and the majesty, for all that is in the heavens and in the earth is yours. Yours is the kingdom, O LORD, and you are exalted as head above all. Both riches and honor come from you, and you rule over all. In your hand are power and might, and in your hand it is to make great and to give strength to all."

Not always what I would pick as a favorite verse, but it is because of something God is showing me right now.

    Blessings,
    Joan
