James - Faith proves itself by works

James 2 v 14-26

Vs 14:  Dear brethren, what's the use of saying you have faith if you don't prove it by your actions?  That kind of faith can't save anyone.
I believe these verse are saying the following:  We were saved by grace through Jesus Christ.  Not by works, not by donations, not by your position in life.  It was an act of grace and mercy and love on the part of our father - a gift.

However,

  • because we believe,
  • because we serve the one true God,
  • because we have been saved by grace,
  • because of our FAITH in Christ who died for us, we should do good works.

We should serve others, because of our faith in Jesus Christ.
We should help out, go the extra mile, be available for the things of Christ - because of our faith in Him.

Its not enough to just believe in God -
Vs 19 says:  Even the demons believe this, and they tremble in terror.

We show our faith by doing good deeds in His name.

Like Vs 26 says:  Just as the body is dead without a spirit, so also faith is dead without good deeds.

My encouragement to you is to look for opportunities to do good works.  A helping hand, an act of kindness, serve another, a good listener, whatever it is - do it as unto the Lord - because of your faith.

God bless
Tracy

  1. Tracy,
You have such a beautiful way of speaking God's truth in love. As I read your post, God convicted me with the word "more". He's called us to serve others, not to earn His favor, but like you wrote, BECAUSE we have been blessed by His favor, His mercy, and His love...and He's calling me to do more.

    Thank you-

  4. Hi Tracy! :)

This is so true; although we don't do good works to be saved or stay saved, we do good works because we are saved. :) We naturally obey God's law and do good works which is a sign of our being saved, and also because of our faith and love for Him.

    Blessings and love! :)

  5. Hi Tracy:

Because of the outpouring of our love toward the Savior, we should desire to do good works.

It is sad that many think the other way, believing they must do good to be accepted by God.

While we can never repay Him for His grace, our works are evidence of our salvation and love for Him.

I'm loving this series on James.

  6. Great encouragement. I want to do good deeds simply because I love Christ and want to share His love.

  7. Hi Stacy - yes, because of His grace, we should be doing more for Him and His children.

Hi Stefanie - amen, now for the walking :)

Hi Shanda - I saw that. Love that we're thinking alike on the things of God.

Hi Denise - God's way is always opposite to out ways. His ways are just so much more rewarding and blessed. Blessings and love to you too :)

Hi Joan - I like how you say our works are evidence, amen. And I'm glad you are enjoying this series. that is very encouraging to me.

Hi Jenifer - at the end of the day, it is that simple :)

Lovely ladies, you bless me and are awesome.

  11. I was asked this question a few weeks ago by a co-worker. My response? We do good works in response to God for what He has done for us. We are saved by grace, but we respond out of love. How could we not? To sit back and basically do nothing is ignoring His incredible gift to us. By sharing His love, we bring honor and glor to Him.

    Blessings, Joan

  13. Tracy,
What a good word. If we stay so full of Him, then the works will just spill out of us! If we don't do good works, He still loves us, but oh, how much sweeter the relationship when we love others as He has loved us!
You are an inspiration and a blessing!

  16. Believing itself is an act. There need not be any conflict between faith and works, if all are rooted in God. God's grace is a gift; accepting it is an act. They're an inseparable part of each other. No earning; just accepting.

  17. Hi JNCL - very interesting thought and I think, so true. We strive to do, sometimes, to prove, maybe. Great thought.
