James - Faith produces Dependence on God

James 4 vs 13-17:

(13)  You people who say, "Today or tomorrow we can going to a certain town and will stay there a year. We will do business there and make a profit."
(14)  How do you know what will happen tomorrow?  For your life is like the morning fog - its here a little while, then its gone.
(15)  What you ought to say is, "If the Lord wants us to, we will live and do this or that."
(16)  Otherwise you will be boasting about your own plans, and all such boasting is evil.
(17)  Remember, it is sin to know what you ought to do and then not do it.

The thing that stands out for me is ONLY God knows our life and the length of it.  And its arrogant to say "I'll do this" or "I'm doing that" because we're boasting in our own strength.

So instead I try to say, "If God wills, I'd like to do this or that."  Why?  Because faith in God indicates my dependence on Him!
Are you plugged into God's word?

The other thing that caught my attention is vs 17 is that it is a sin if we know what we should do, and then don't do it!  That is a scary thought.  How many times have I known what to do and not done it?  This verse says its a sin.

Another section of James that needs to sink into the heart!

God bless
Tracy

  1. Love this truth... "faith in God indicates my dependence on Him," so true Tracy! Fear of the unknown has us making our own plans and struggling to make things happen in our own strength. That also sadly squeezes God out. Thanks for your insight :)

I was quite happy walking around in my fog.
    Another holy clap for today.
    Have much to ponder.

  3. Hi Tracy,

This is so true; if we walk in a consistent and faithful relationship trusting in God's provision then we should never come to a time when we do not know His will. Nor should there be a time when we are not able to carry out His will. We should passionately pursue an intimate relationship with Him throughout the day!! :)

    Enjoy your day today! :)
    Blessings and hugs,
    Denise

  6. Tracy - In the past few years I have been weighted by the verse...to know what to do and not do it is sin. It seems so easy to put people in a mold. Yet, my thoughts on this verse are, we are held accountable not by our evaluation compared to others...but by the truth of the Word and the calling/knowledge He has put into each us. Individually. I would love to study the Greek on this....in fact, just might do that now. Thanks for sharing. And stirring thought. Blessings ~ jen

  12. VS 17 is one of my favorite verses in the bible, it is soo challenging as it applies to all area's of our life where there is a gray area. It reminds me of the verse "everyman does what he thinks is right but God judges the heart", i think they fit nicely together!

  13. Tracy,

I have been learning a lot about dependence lately, and your post today really drove the point home, my strength comes from the Lord, my dependence is on Him because only He knows what tomorrow will bring and I depend on Him to get me through it, not my own strength. Awesome post Tracy.
