O - Obedience

1 Sam 15 v 22:  Then Samuel said: "Has the Lord as great delight in burnt offerings and sacrifices, as in obeying the voice of the Lord?  Behold, to obey is better than sacrifice, and to Heed than the fat of rams."

Check out the next verse:

v 23:  For rebellion is as the sin of witchcraft, and stubbornness is as iniquity and idolatry. Because you have rejected the word of the Lord, He also has rejected you from being king.

OUCH!

To obey implies an action, a decision to trust, an act of your will to comply.  To sacrifice implies payment, a bartering.  As vs 22 says, both are a great delight to Him, but obedience is better, and has Jesus not paid the ultimate sacrifice/price for us?
I like that!

Vs 23 - well, quite harsh, but then God's word is renowned for telling it like it is.  This is another example of God's high standards.  To rebel - same as witchcraft!  Stubbornness - same as sin!  I'm pretty stubborn at times, not always accepting God's word at face value - according to this verse - I am sinning!!!

To obey God's word takes sacrificing self!

My encouragement to you is to obey the Lord in whichever way you know how.  Read His word, trust in His desire for your obedience - He loves you.

God bless
Tracy

  1. I had an early start to the day and missed your prompt until now. I try and get the children to see that obedience is better than sacrifice too, seems a hard lesson for us all.

  2. I desire to obey Him in all things. Sometimes it is easier said than done, so we have to make a conscience effort to obey.

  3. Someone once told me that "obedience leads to blessing" I believe this. Obedience doesn't guarantee a pain free or problem free life but God still blesses our choice to obey Him!

  5. Big Ouch for me too. Stubbornness is as sin... And yet my prayer has been...give me a quiet and gentle spirit. Help me to be meek and gracious. Guess BIG prayers require BIG God. So glad He is not finished w/ me yet. Lol ~ jen

  7. Eileen's words, "Obedience leads to blessing", are the perfect summation of your post. I agree totally with all that you have said. I have tried to teach this to my children. I look forward to the day they completely embrace this principle. Thanks for posting God's truth!

  8. Wow Tracy~verse 23 just sort of smacked me!! As my name implies I have always been a rebel at heart. God is still working on me with that. And...it'd been said that stubborn could be my middle name. Reading this verse I really need to work on this. Thanks you for showing me God's truth!!

    Blessings to you Tracy...Chelle

  9. Tracy:

My word for this year is obedience. (And I admit that I have failed at times.)

I'm sorry I haven't been around to visit this week - I've been busy getting settled into my new blog location. Finally getting a chance to visit my favorite blogs and I'm always inspired when I visit here.

    Blessings,
    Joan

  10. Hi Pam - I agree with you, Eileen hit the nail on the head.

Hi Chelle - I don't consider myself stubborn or rebellious, but when I consider God's word, then I think He defines me as such by some of my behaviour. So as to working on things, you and me both!!

Hi Joan - I've seen your new blog and it looks great. Glad you back and thanks for the encouragement.

God bless all you lovely ladies
