There is this secular song on the radio (don't know the name) and the first 2 lines of it always get my attention:
"My best friend gave me the best advice, He said each day's a gift and not a given right"
I think this speaks volumes about this verse. Each day is a gift. One we should be thankful for.
James 4 v13-14 says: Come now, you who say 'today or tomorrow we will go to such and such a city, spend a year there, but and sell, and make a profit' whereas you do not know what will happen tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour that appears for a little time and then vanishes away.
The next verse answers how we should speak about the future:
James 4 v 15: Instead you ought to say, 'If the LORD WILLS, we shall live and do this or that.'
Vs 2: Let another man praise you, and not your own mouth; a stranger, and not your own lips.
Don't blow your own trumpet! Let what is good about you be heard from the mouths of others. Don't you feel so much more blessed when you hear something good has been said about you?
Vs 9: Ointment and perfume delight the heart, and the sweetness of a man's friend does so by hearty council.
I want to be a friend whose council is a delight and to my friend.
Vs 19: As in water face reveals face, so a man's heart reveals the man.
What is in the heart comes out the mouth and so his true colours are revealed. Best we start filling our hearts with God's word and character and push all the rubbish out and replace it with good.
