How should we Love?

1 Corinth 13 v 4-8:
(4) Love suffers long and is kind
Love does not envy
Love does not parade itself, is not puffed up
(5) Does not behave rudely
Does not seek its own
Is not provoked, thinks no evil (and keeps no record of when it has been wronged)
(6) Does not rejoice in iniquity, but rejoices in the truth;
(7) Bears all things,
Believes all things
Hopes all things,
Endures all things
(8) Love never fails....

Wow - I fail on each and every point!  I'm sure we have all read these verses and like Prov 31 is the ideal woman to attain to, 1 Corinth 13 v 4-8 is the ideal "how to love" formula.

Boy, have I got a long way to go!  Thank goodness the Lord does not expect perfection from us, but He does want to see us grow, improve, and overcome.  To grow from glory to glory.

I think much of what is said in these verses is only possible if we are able to practice Forgiveness.

Something I heard a long time ago is very true with regards to practicing God's kind of love and that is:
Love is not a feeling - it is an act of your will!  Forgiveness is like that too - an act of your will.

It is so much easier to love if we remain Thankful for all, in all, all the time!

In vs 3 above these verses on love it says - any sacrifice, any gift, even the giving of your life - means nothing without love.

Everyone has heard of Agape love, right?  I like how my bible notation defines it:
Agape love = Love of choice!

These verses cover every possible reason why you could withhold your love - deceit, anger, provocation, evil, etc - but God says to love despite all these things.  This is very hard!  On some level we can all attest to that.  However, God's word says - with God, all things are possible - even loving those who have hurt and harmed us.

My encouragement to you is God loves you completely, faults and all, we have to try emulate that and do our best, with the help of His word, and with prayer, to love those God has placed in our lives.  Work at it one day at a time.  God's word says - of all the gifts, of all His commands - LOVE is the most important!

God bless
Tracy

  8. Tracy, I love all the pictures in the post! Love is so important. That's why Jesus said the greatest commandment is to LOVE God with everything and LOVE our neighbor as ourselves.

    Many blessings!

  9. Tracy,

Our greatest commandmant to love other as our Lord Jesus Christ loved us. It is hard sometimes to love those who make themselves quite unlovable. But I love the line that love is not a feeling but an act of will, so true, everythign we have means nothing if we don't have love. Blessings to you Tracy, what a lovely post to end the week with.

  11. Oh how this post spoke to me. I have been the VBS nurse this week, and I'm hormonal so I really had to rely on God's grace to love on the kids-even the ones that really weren't "sick". I love the reminder that love is a choice, to work at it one day at a time, and forgiveness is as well. Great reminder. Thanks Tracy.

  12. I also like the way you tied thankfulness to love. I often think about the qualities of the fruit of the Spirit and how I often don't exhibit them.

    Great post.

  13. Hi Tracy,

Sometimes to love certain people in our lives can be hard. I have to remind myself that I am not always easy to love either. I like what your bible says=Love of choice!!

    Have a great weekend.

    Blessings in Him...Chelle

  14. Hi Tami, I can see why God made love a 'choice', because emotions might dictate otherwise. thanks for the comment.

Hi Joan, I've only recently started learning to tie thankfulness in and it makes a huge difference (esp with my teenagers!). Thanks for the comment.

Hi Chelle, great reminder that we also need to see how lovable we are. Thanks for the comment.

    God bless you all ladies

  15. When me and my husband got married we had that entire verses of scripture on our wedding invitations, annocements and on the cake as well. We brought them into our vows for we wanted God to show us how to love one another. For we knew we loved each other but we wanted God to show us because He was the one who created both of us and only He knows what the other person needs when it comes to love and so neither one of us wanted to be selfish in loving. Each night when we pray together we pray that God will bless our love making and that it brings glory to God.

I believe if we will really grasp the whole meaning of what that love chapter meaning is then and only then can be learn to love everyone the way Jesus said it is to be.

  16. What a meaningful post! The only One who loves perfectly is Jesus; each one of us on this earth falls short - always and all the time. May Christ become more and more seen in us!

Happy Anniversary to you as well. Thanks for your visit!

  19. Tracy - So thankful for His perfect love as I read this. We did a little 'test' in our Bible Study one time. Each of us put our names in place of where it says, "Love" in the verse above. It was such a reality check & very humbling. Where would we be without His perfect love? Thanks for this great post. A wonderful reminder of His goodness as we head out on vacation this morning!
