Be Doers of the Word

James 1 v 22:  Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves.

For 4 weeks now a solar outside light, that comes on when it detects movement, has been lying on my dining room table.  My husband shows anyone who visits how brilliant it is (pardon the pun) and how well it works.   But, its of no use on my dining room table!  It should be mounted on the garage wall facing the driveway for use in the night, but.....

Its just a useless piece of plastic and metal, making an unusual dining room table ornament (not!).

God's word illuminates!
This is a little like reading God's word, thinking its awesome, and then not applying it to your life.  Your life does not change.  Your inner light, powered by the Son of God, if not exposed to the word and then converted into practical God fearing action, will not change your soul.  Your Christianity will just be a fish sticker on the bumper of a speeding car - not much of an example!  You won't be growing.

So, as the verse above says, don't only be readers of the word - be also doers of the word. Apply God's word.  In this way your life grows closer to Christ and inner light shines brighter, drawing others to Christ.

God bless
Tracy

  1. Oh Tracy; the first part of your message made me chuckle! It reminds me of my husbands "honey-do" list that never gets done! Hehehe!
I love this this verse, and agree that getting to know God is actually to do just as the Bible says, even if it means stepping out of our comfort zone. :)
    Great post!

  3. Tracy,

I had to laugh a bit at your table ornament comment.

Great post and what a wonderful lesson, we will never grow in our relationship with God if we don't read his word and spend time with Him. I am loving your study of Proverbs I read these verses and take something completely different away from them, so I am loving that I am seeing the Proverbs in a different persepective.

Just a thought but maybe you could decorate your table ornament with with some flowers or something :).

  7. Tracy, what a great comparison. God Word is just words if we fail to apply! Thanks.

  8. About two months ago I taught on the Radio about James and one of the things I loved was James was telling the people that no matter what you may be up against you must change your perspective of things. Either you see yourself as an over-comer or you see yourself as defeated.

And far to often we see ourselves as defeated because we don't get a better perspective of things we look at view things with our carnal eyes and that is not how God see's things we must look in the spirit realm not the physical realm..Of course when we look at things in the natural we become defeated because we don't see a way out but the moment a person change their view and start looking in the spirit realm they see themselves as over comers.

Great post I thought I would add my thoughts to this.

  9. Thanks for visiting my post on the Indian swing set. In your comments you said you didn't think you were a writer--I would say emphatically that you ARE a writer--and a very, very good one at that!
Thanks so very much for this heart-piercing post. God is blessing through it.
    Blessings on your day!

  10. Hi Glenda - you are so right - its the doing of it...

Hi Eileen - Yes, I agree. If we don't apply His word then the bible is just a good story book.

  15. Great point, Tracy! God's Word isn't meant to just sit in us. It should flow through us. I don't want to just read and forget. I want to be a doer. Many blessings!

  17. Hi Allison - I also want to be a doer, that's why I did this post, as I reminder to self!

Hi Lisa - I too don't want to read and forget. I think in the applying, is where we make the word concrete in us.
