It is the ultimate expression of God's loyalty, purity, and mercy extended toward His people - to be reflected in human relationships of brotherly concern, marital fidelity, and adoration of God.
1 Corinth 13 tells us that no matter what gifting we have, if we don't have love we have nothing. No matter how generous we are or what we sacrifice, if not motivated by love, we do it for nothing.
1 Corinth 13 v 4-8: Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. It does not demand it own way. It is not irritable and it keeps no record of being wronged. It does not rejoice about injustice but rejoices whenever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.
[Insert whistle here!]Wow! Have I got a long way to go! I have been known to be impatient, rude, demanding. I dig up old bones now and then when useful. I'm sometimes highly irritated with people. On the positive side I can say that in general I am not a jealous person, nor boastful (I don't think). I cannot stand it when people lie. I dont like injustice. I suppose that to some extent we all succeed in some areas of love and fail in others. God is love and here He tells us what love is. So, we have a template, a map to follow. We need to keep trying and never give up.
How do we love like this?
1 John 4v17: And as we live in God, our love grows more perfect.
I believe the more we 'live in God' by reading His word, seeking Him in prayer, etc, the more we will love like He does.
If we love, we should show it
1 John 3 v 18: Dear children, lets not merely say that we love each other; let us show the truth by our actions.
Ever heard the saying, 'love is not a feeling - its an act of your will.'
How important is love to God?
Mark 12 v 30-31: And you must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, all your mind, and all your strength. The second commandment is equally important: Love your neighbour as yourself.
God said the two most important commandments are to love God and love your neighbour. When we do this we pretty much cannot break the other commandments!
How do we do this?
1 John 5 v 3: Loving God means keeping His commandments.
1John 4 v 19: We love each other because He first loved us.
What does the bible say about how God loves us?
John 3 v 16: For God loved the world so much that he gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life.
Eph 1 v 4: Even before he made the world, God loved us and chose us in Christ to be holy and without fault in His eyes.
Ps 139 v 17: How precious are your thoughts about me, O God. They cannot be numbered!
Ps 138 v 8: The Lord will work out His plans for my life - for your faithful love, O Lord, endures forever.
Romans 8 v 38: And I am convinced that nothing can ever separate us from God's love. Neither angels nor demons, neither our fears for today nor our worries about tomorrow - not even the power of hell can separate us from God's love.
The bible says so much more about love. This is just my attempt to put 'love' in a nutshell. My encouragement to you is find every opportunity to love - But do it as unto the Lord, not expecting anything in return. This way you know you will never be disappointed because God cannot help but love you back!
